Terrified of losing their business, movie studios struck back with "widescreen" films using 1. When widescreen TVs started appearing, they emulated those same ratios, but many TV shows and some movies were still in —and we were eventually left with a bit of a mess.

Canny manufacturers, including LG, have solved the problem by allowing you to adjust the picture ratio on the TV to fit the program you're watching. If it's not set properly, however, your image will look distorted or cut off. A quick bit of troubleshooting can fix the problem easily. Press the "Menu" button on the remote and scroll down to the "Option" title it should be second from the bottom.

Then select "Aspect Ratio. You simply need to pick the one which fits the show you're watching. Choose the ratio for older movies and TV programs. You should see a pair of bars on the left and right side of the screen. That's okay: the bars keep the program in the same proportion in which it was filmed. Select the ratio for widescreen movies and for more recent shows to match their longer width. For some movies, you may see black bars and the top and bottom of the screen.

Again, that allows the movie to be shown in the manner it was filmed. Select "Horizon" to horizontally expand the image onscreen. It will fill the whole screen—eliminating the black bars to the left and the right—but it may look distorted. Use the "Zoom 1" option to zoom the image forward.

That will eliminate the black bars at the top or the bottom of the screen, though you will cut off the edges of the image. Pick the "Zoom 2" button to select a midway point between "Horizon" and "Zoom 1. Use the "Cinema Zoom" button to enlarge the picture to fit the screen. This option allows you to adjust the proportion to your liking, rather than use the set proportions of the other aspect options.

This was far from ideal since it lost some of the crispiness. In the end I just accepted that I could not see the status bar on that computer if using that screen — I normally contolled it remotely from my laptop via VNC anyway. But with the new office screens that was not acceptable. The image on the left shows the LG with the status bar now visible ie. Who knew! See below:. It will either work or not work. I have seen one edge case with a cable that was too long, but it would lose sync every few seconds briefly — not some gradual degredation of quality as the morons in shops would have you believe.

How to Troubleshoot the Picture Ratio on an LG TV

It may be unrelated, but if there is a conversion issue from old analogue programmes to digital TV format and, for whatever reason, they differ by a line or two, it may lead to odd lines and zooming slightly would then remove them. I am guessing consideranly here, mind! I am reading this on a Sony Bravia monitor that is conveniently desk sized, able to be wall mounted and very savvy about being a PC monitor.

It offers the option of exact representation of my laptop screen resolution, a slightly stretched version and a stretch out to the borders.

I guess this is an advantage of so many TV broadcasters using Sony kit. I can use my laptop as a keyboard, if required, plays USB sticks or media servers and interacts with other wired and wireless devices. I had intended getting a Samsung or LG monitor, but my requirement for p, IP awareness and a 24 inch screen narrowed the field considerably. Thanks for the info!

Late to the game, but normal TV signals transmit extra info around the edges, hence the reason for any overscan at all. Thank you! This was a tremendous time saver. Thank you for that! Thank you so much for your advice! A warm hug from Mexico. One note…. I unchecked it and it shrunk and had over an inch of black all around. Are you looking for the solution to your computer problem?

Joined May 12, Messages I've noticed that the picture is cut off at both sides of the screen and that this is known as overscan. Aspect Ratio is set to original and Just Scan is turned On but I'm still seeing that the picture is cut off. Is there anything else I can do to see the entire image on the screen instead of the zoomed in broadcast I'm getting?

Here's a webpage with the TV settings available for my model that might be useful. I also took a look at the manual but it hasn't been helpful to me. Currently, overscan is noticeable most during commercials and during the news but I'd still like to fix it. Thanks for any help. Triple6 Moderator. Just Scan should fix it. Do you have zoom enabled on the TV? What is the video source?

Is it perhaps zoomed or set for the wrong aspect ratio? If you plug the device to another HDMI port does it do the same thing? Most TV's should have independent settings or each input source.

The video source is a Samsung cablebox.I got home today, turned on the TV, and immediately noticed that the picture appeared zoomed in. My SD channels all had a minimized screen and appeared cropped. My HD channels were full screen but appeared cropped as well. The picture simply looked as if a 'zoom' option was used and large portions of the picture are cut out, This is horizontal as well as vertical.

I checked every possible screen ratio and picture size. Screen resolution was properly set. I even reset each STB manually and checked the connections. Nothing was changed on my end since the last time I watched TV when I had no problems. I was on the phone with tech support for quite some time and the gentleman did everything he could to find out what the issue was but to no avail.

Let me know if your problem got solved. HDMI Glitches have different symptoms. It would have to be an HDMI cable though. Analog cables won't glitch in that fashion. I have an LG television and only one STB, so I initially thought that I might have accidentally changed my aspect ratio setting until I realized there wasn't a single button to accidentally press to do that! I called Verizon and they couldn't do anything, they suggested trying the box to another TV and everything worked!

The result was the aspect ratio was restored. So from here I determined that there was a hardware problem at the STB input on the tuner or somehow the setting got changed. I looked over my tuner's remote and there it was, a single button to cycle through aspect ratios. I must have sat on it or something. I don't understand how this situation could affect three sets of STBs and TVs simultaneously though, unless you have you also have a surround sound system that is travelling all over your house.
